THREE-BOOK SYNOPSES PART ONE — THE STORY OF BRUNHILD On Christmas Eve, history professor Brunhild reads her eight-year-old daughter Eir a dark legend written on a sheet of paper that the girl found in an old drawer. It tells of a terrifying Creature that has lived in their city for many centuries, condemning its inhabitants to perpetual fear and submission. Then Brunhild reveals to her daughter the secret of her childhood: at the age of eight, she became lost in the mountains during a snowstorm on Christmas Day. She is saved by the troll Nordrig, who takes her to a mysterious castle. There, Brunhild meets the Valkyrie Trud, imprisoned in the body of a terrifying Creature. In the castle, Brunhild falls asleep and awakens as an immortal Valkyrie in the Middle Ages, in the world of the gods. But immortality comes at a price: Valkyries are forbidden to love mortal warriors. In the world of the gods, the Valkyrie Trud, in her true form as a beautiful maiden, tells Brunhild of a terrible prophecy: the god of deception, Loki, will provoke bloody wars in the human world. Once the millions of fallen have filled the world of the dead, ruled by his half-dead daughter Hel, they will lead an army of the dead in war against the realm of the gods to destroy the Great Odin and the universe. Loki wants to overthrow Odin. He skilfully manipulates human flaws. Trud opposes him, maintaining the balance between good and evil in the human world. Loki steals the golden hair of the goddess Sif, but Nordrig exposes him. To avoid losing his ability to appear in the human world as punishment for this trick, Loki must find the dark Alfar and persuade them to make new golden hair for Sif. Odin has given him three days to do so. Trud intends to find the dark Alfar first and thwart Loki. Brunhild goes with her. They cross the worlds of giants and trolls, overtaking Loki. The dark Alfar help them, and Loki is temporarily defeated. Odin forbids him from entering the human world for three centuries. Loki knows who is responsible for his defeat and bribes Odin’s raven to spy on the Valkyries. The raven reports to Loki that Brunhild has fallen in love with a mortal warrior, thereby breaking the strict prohibition. Trud supports Brunhild and deceives Odin, but Loki exposes them. Enraged, Odin strips Brunhild of her immortality and puts her into an enchanted sleep, while he sends Trud to the human world, where she will remain in the form of the Creature until the mortal Brunhild genuinely feels sorry for her. Brunhild awakens in the same castle, once again a little girl. Beside her is the terrifying Creature. Brunhild feels sorry for her, unaware that she is fulfilling Odin’s condition. Trud becomes a beautiful maiden and returns to the world of the gods. After hearing her mother’s story, eight-year-old Eir makes a brave decision: she too will become a Valkyrie and help Trud in her endless struggle against Loki. PART TWO — THE PATH OF EIR Eir is studying at university and waiting for Trud to fulfil her promise. In the world of the gods, Loki has quarrelled with the goddess of youth, and she has refused to give his daughter Hel the apple of youth. Hel has begun to age rapidly. In exchange for the apple of youth, Trud asks Hel for a safe passage for Eir through the world of the dead, so that Eir can finally become a Valkyrie. Hel agrees and takes Eir from the human world. But in truth, she wants not only the apple of youth, but Eir’s soul as well. First, however, she needs to regain her youth. Hel pretends that she is unhappy and alone. Compassionate Eir genuinely feels sorry for the pretender and promises to bring her the apple of youth from the world of the gods. Hel triumphs because returning to the world of the dead will be a one-way journey for Eir. By this Hel will take revenge on the hated Trud and deprive Odin of his future Valkyrie. After the world of the dead, Eir finds herself in the realm of the goddess of winter, Skadi, a world of eternal darkness and frost. In this world, Eir is faced with a choice: to save an old wolf or a little wolf cub. Eir makes a mistake and saves the wrong one, putting her life at risk. Skadi recognises Eir’s nobility and opens the gates of her palace to her. There, Eir meets the troll Nordig, who leads her into the world of giants. Loki, in the guise of an old man, bribes the giants, accusing Eir of theft, and they throw her into a dungeon. Nordig informs the goddesses of what has happened. Wanting to obtain the apple of youth, Hel coldly betrays her father. She exposes Loki’s deception to the giants, and they throw into a dungeon. Eir is freed. But her journey towards her cherished goal of becoming a Valkyrie is a series of trials. Therefore, Trud sends her to the world of the light Alfar. Eir must help them stop the war with the dark Alfar. She successfully passes this trial. After that, the Great Odin takes Eir into his service as a Valkyrie. To protect the girl from eternal sorrow over the mortals whom she will have to part with, the supreme god does not grant her immortality, but from now on, her soul belongs to the world of the gods. Eir knows that Hel has deceived her, but keeps her word: she returns to the world of the dead to give the aging goddess the apple of youth. Hel is struck by Eir’s honest deed and decides to refuse to help her father, the god of deception Loki, in his plan to destroy the universe. The all-seeing Odin learns that the threat of the universe’s destruction has receded and to preserve the balance between good and evil he frees Loki from the dungeon. Trud thanks the Valkyrie Eir and sends her back to the human world. There, she is to fulfil her destiny. PART THREE — THE JOURNEY OF GERTRUD Loki has no intention of giving up his desire to destroy the human world. The Valkyrie Trud sees only one way to stop Loki — to awaken love for an earthly girl within him. For this purpose, Trud finds among humans a student named Gertrud (Gerti). The girl bears a striking resemblance to the goddess of loyalty whom Loki worships. Trud, in the disguise of an elderly lady, meets her and offers to tell her about the world of the Vanir gods, which Gerti studies at university. Gerti comes to her hotel, but the moment she crosses the threshold, she finds herself in the world of the gods. Gerti meets the Valkyrie Eir, two giant sisters, and a pair of werewolves in love. Knowing that Loki is watching them, Trud leaves Gerti alone in the Grove of Lovers. Admiring her resemblance to the goddess of loyalty, Loki meets Gerti. In conversation with her, he learns that she wants to become Trud’s ally and decides to destroy her. Loki charms the girl and sends her to the island of the goddess, whose very sight causes a mortal to perish. The Valkyries rescue Gerti and reveal Loki’s deception to her.
